My dad had a thing about Doctor’s knives. I don’t know if he watched some old country Doc use one to mix medicine powders or count pills when he was a kid, or what. But they fascinated him. At his funeral, they wanted his family to all have a knife from his collection in their pocket- so I picked his Dr’s knives and everyone got one- 8 grandkids and 5 children/in-laws (my Mom just had her pink Victorinox Classic SD that he gave her). I still have some:

[KnifeNews] RoseCraft Tanasi Lake Debuts with Bora Bora Blue Covers

This Friday a summery new RoseCraft slipjoint will be available. It’s called the Tanasi Lake, and like other recent RoseCraft releases it’s a practical jack knife design. RoseCraft CEO Andy Armstrong, who is responsible for all of the company’s slipjoint designs, has been maintaining an intense pace with the non-locking releases this year. Each RoseCraft […]

[NBK] Kitchen Perfection Chef’s Knife Review

A Comfy Take on an Outdoor Kiritsune I didn’t expect to like this knife. I shouldn’t have. There are so many red flags in its various vendor descriptions across the internet, but in practice it actually performs pretty well, and has some nice ergonomic touches. Specifications Overall Length: 12.25” Blade Length: 7.75” Blade Steel: High ... Read more

[NBK] CRKT Soldotna Review

It’s a lightweight hunting knife with a classic feel to it. The Soldatna design celebrates CRKT’s 30th anniversary. If someone had made me guess what kind of knife they would put out for such an occasion, I wouldn’t have thought of a hunting knife like this. But that’s part of CRKT’s charm. They find a ... [NBK] Civivi Cloud Peak Reivew

An Unexpected Classic Outdoor Knife, but a Welcome One The Cloud Peak continues a tiny section of Civivi’s line that I have always wanted them to expand on: Normal looking fixed blades. Up to now, they’ve mostly put out fixed blades that look like rejected Star Trek prototypes (with all due respect to Maciej Torbé; ... Read more

[NBK] Schwarz Knives Lost Trail 5 Review

One of the Most Thought Out Camping Knives I’ve Ever Used As the biggest fixed blade made by Schwarz knives so far, I had some big expectations about the Lost Trail 5, especially because TJ Schwarz gave a detailed run down of the knife when he announced it. The short version of that video is ... Read more

[NBK] Begg Knives Diamici Review: A Solid, Classy Folder

This is a classy flipper with great action and a slice-y blade. There’s nothing revolutionary about the design: a liner-lock flipper with a drop point D2 blade is anything but a rare sight these days, but the dressing of this knife makes it stand out in a way that makes me happy to take it ... [NBK] Kizer Comet Review

The Kizer Comet is a flipper with an art background but outdoor genetics. There’s something oddly refreshing about the Comet. It’s a snappy flipper with some old school design lines that make it immediately likable. My first impressions: It’s almost a perfect little folder except for one marring detail: The detent is way too strong. ... Read more

[NBK] Mercer Millennia Knife Set Review

The TL;DR version is that the knives in this set are okay at best, but the convenience of the magnetic board for storage makes them invaluable. That’s not to say the knives are bad. In the grand scheme of things, they get the job done. The big handles make them feel a little weird, but ... Read more

[NBK] The Cangshan Helena Starter Knife Set Review

I enjoyed using two-thirds of this set.  There are some nice ergonomic details in the design language of the series that make smaller knives pleasant to hold and easy to manipulate, but I just couldn’t get myself to enjoy the chef’s knife. Leave some room for my increasing bias toward lighter knives, but for me, ... Read more
